Oxted Band is delighted to announce the appointment of Darrell Scholes as its new Musical Director.
Darrell is a very experienced cornet player, Brass Band Conductor, Arranger and Music Teacher with an extensive knowledge of Brass Band repertoire, classical transcriptions and contemporary music in all genres.
During childhood Darrell was tutored and mentored by the Grimethorpe Colliery Band’s esteemed Musical Director, the late George Thompson MBE, in cornet playing, conducting and arranging. He furthered his musical education by attending Salvation Army Music Schools both locally and at the National School at Cobham Hall in Kent for a number of years. He also performed regularly with many groups in his native Yorkshire including various Salvation Army bands, the Yorkshire Schools Brass Band and Mexborough College Brass Group, Wind Band and Orchestra. His conducting career began at the tender age of 17, when he was appointed as leader of the youth choir at Doncaster’s Salvation Army Corps.
As a performer, Darrell has given concerts and made recordings around the world. He has recently returned from a concert tour of Canada and the USA, which included performances at the Great American Brass Band Festival in Danville, Kentucky.
As a Musical Director/Conductor, Darrell has guest conducted the Friary Guildford Band, the Horsham Borough Band and has also regularly deputised for the Musical Director of Northfleet Brass. He has been the Musical Director for the South London Fellowship Band for the past two years.
Darrell describes himself as an “enthusiastic, passionate and committed music professional who always considers the listener and player when putting musical content together”.
He is married with two grown up children and lives in West Sussex.
Darrell's first engagement with the Band will be at The Woldingham Picnic on Sunday 21st June.
